Plastic-free citywide Diners and food markets have not yet adapted

The first phase of Hong Kong’s new legislation to control disposable plastic products was officially implemented on April 22, the catering industry bears the brunt, some citizens are dissatisfied with the excessive charges for takeaway tableware, paper drinking tubes are also inconvenient to use. Some supermarkets are switching to paper boxes to carry sushi, becoming a “sushi blind box”, secretary for the Environment and Ecology Mr. Tse Chin-wan responded to the remarks, this approach is “somewhat unreasonable”, because supermarket sushi is pre-made, where customers eat is “out of control” of the merchant, it is still reasonable to use plastic containers as takeaway food. At the same time, Mr. Tse Chin-wan explained that if the customer orders food in the food court, even if the seat does not belong to an individual restaurant, if the customer specifies to dine in, the ready-made food still needs to comply with the plastic regulations.  

The society has not yet adapted to the “plastic removal order”, what is “takeaway” is more thought-provoking, LHGroup chairman Simon Wong Kit-lung reflected that, the current laws are too complicated because the definitions of “takeaway” as defined in the Food Business License regulation and “takeaway” as defined in the Disposable Plastic Tableware regulation are actually different, causing major headaches for the restaurant market and diners.
