45% of hotel and catering industry employers find it “extremely difficult” to recruit
The Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management recently conducted a survey on the “Future Workforce Study 2024”, in which 300 companies and institutions from 20 different industries participated. The study aims to explore the changes in Hong Kong’s demand for human resources in the future to 2028, analyze the factors affecting human resource forecasts, and evaluate the application of Hong Kong’s various talent entry programs. The survey pointed out that although the hotel and catering industry has been able to fully resume operations since the pandemic last year, many people who once worked in this industry have changed careers, resulting in a serious talent shortage problem in the industry and a serious imbalance between talent supply and demand.
Research results show that about 45% of employers in the hotel and catering industry find it “extremely difficult” to recruit employees, while another 55% find it “quite difficult”. Among these positions, waiters, cleaners and housekeepers are the top three most difficult to fill, with difficulty levels of filling vacancies at 27%, 27% and 18% respectively. The data shows that the hotel and restaurant industry continues to face challenges in hiring enough people in the short term.
